Nov 27, 2019 SuperDuper! Is an app that has seemingly been around forever and allows people to clone their Mac's disk. That has a few advantages, not least the fact that the cloned disk can be made bootable. So, let's say you have an issue and need to get back up and running quickly. No problem, just boot from your cloned disk and you're back to work. What is SuperDuper! For Mac SuperDuper! Is an advanced, yet easy to use disk copying program. It can, of course, make a straight copy, or 'clone' - useful when you want to move all your data from one machine to another, or do a simple backup. In moments, you can completely duplicate your boot drive to another drive, partition, or image file. M1 Macs can't be copied in a way that makes them bootable. Baremetal recovery on an M1 Mac isn't possible, since they depend onthe contents of their internal drive even when booting externally.And the tools required to make bootable copies of Intel Macs arelimited, often fail, and produce inscrutable and undocumenteddiagnostics when they do.
Everything's a tradeoff, and with the M1 Macs, Apple has given usan amazing new platform, while taking away some of the things thatmade macOS such a joy to work with. And one of those things isbootable backups.
The workaround is pretty clever. Use mac camera as security cam. Use an older version of SuperDuper that will copy just the Data partition of your M1 Mac's boot volume — that's everything you really need to be backed up. Then if you want to restore, do a fresh OS install on the internal boot drive and restore your data from the external drive where you cloned your Data partition.
SuperDuper is one of my all-time favorite and most-trusted Mac utilities. Big Sur is a big transition for a disk cloning utility; M1 Macs are an even bigger one. They'll get it.
